509 Delta V Carbon Ignite Helmet Overview

For long rides in the cold, the 509 Delta V Carbon Ignite Helmet has you covered, literally. Its full-face design isolates you from the elements and blocks piercing wind. An innovative heated visor heats the shield to eliminate intrusive fogging. The Delta V is ideal for the trail rider who enjoys long blasts down the trail.

The Delta V is distinguishable from other Delta models in both appearance and function. The Delta V is a premium full-face helmet, whereas the Delta 3 and Delta 4 helmets are modular and offer several configurations. Unlike the Delta 3 and 4, the Delta 5 does not feature a prominent and traditional helmet visor and provides the look of a sleek street helmet. The face shield extends to the base of the chin and is much larger than other Delta models. The new Delta V features enhanced ventilation through the Venturi system and rear reflectors for added trail safety.

Keep reading for a complete feature overview and our list of pros and cons. Our 509 Delta V Carbon Ignite Helmet overview covers the helmet design, sizing & fit, the Ignite heating system, the new Venturi ventilation, safety features, and our professional opinion of the helmet.

Design:

The Delta V provides a unique look for snowmobilers. Unlike a traditional snowmobiling helmet, the Delta V does not feature a conventional sun visor (brim). This look is indistinguishable from that of a modern street helmet.

The 509 Delta V Carbon Ignite is available in 3 color selections: Black Legacy, Racing Red, and Black Ops. Black Legacy has a gloss shine and larger graphics and branding. Racing Red provides a saturated, glossy red color with contrasting carbon fiber panels. Black Ops is a matte black option with very subtle graphics and branding.

Unlike most snowmobiling helmets, the Delta V features a face shield extending to the chin's base. The pull tab is on the chin, unlike most shields, with the tab on either side of the nose piece. This seems purely aesthetic and offers no significant benefit; however, it might be easier to pull from the chin if you struggle to locate the open tab on a traditional visor.

The Delta V utilizes Fidlock magnetic chinstrap for hassle-free strapping. The Fidlock system provides easy access for one-handed use, even with gloves. Fidlock is revolutionary when compared to a traditional D-ring setup.

Sizing & Fit:

The carbon fiber material of the Delta V provides a premium, lightweight feel with a starting weight of 3.9 pounds (1780 grams), slightly heavier than the Delta R3L (3.7 pounds). Not bad for a full-face helmet; however, you can find much lighter open-face options.

Initially, the Delta V has a very snug fit due to cheek pad compression; this is normal. Over time and use, the cheek pads will slightly break in and reduce helmet pressure. We recommend choosing the smallest size possible without causing pain or discomfort after several minutes of wear. If the helmet can wiggle and dance, you need a smaller helmet. Given time and use, the cheek pads will pack into a more comfortable fit.

The helmet has options for sizes small through 3x-large; however, the sizing of the Delta V helmet is significantly off. The sizes are at least a size smaller than what's labeled (maybe even a size and a half smaller). It's vital you physically try on the helmet before committing to a purchase.

Ignite Heating:

The Delta V is a powered helmet featuring an Ignite dual-pane heated shield to eliminate fog and enhance clarity. Unlike previous models of the Delta, the power cable for the Delta V plugs in behind the padding on the base of the helmet at the rider's left. The cable is then connected to your snow machine or an external 12-volt power pack (not yet available). The power cable is included. Like the 509 Ignite Goggles, the shield is electric and heated with integrated heating elements. The shield utilizes anti-scratch and anti-fog coatings for further clarity protection.

Venturi Ventilation:

The new Venturi ventilation system aids the ignite system in preventing and eliminating fog. Two side intake/outtake vents pull moist air from the helmet without allowing cold air to flow in. A single top vent provides added airflow and additional comfort. Side vents can be opened and closed through interior sliders (one on each side of the chin). The top vent also has an open/close toggle directly behind it.

Safety:

The 509 Delta V Carbon Helmet is DOT/ECE dual-certified, meaning it complies with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Regulation 22 (ECE R22.05). The Delta V is unique in that it features three back-of-the-head reflectors to increase rider visibility. These rear reflectors provide other riders with enhanced awareness and perception of the distance and size of a leading snowmobiler.

Pros: What We Like:

We applaud the decision to relocate the power connection from the side of the shield to the base of the helmet. The new location makes for a less intrusive and more comfortable design.

We like the addition of rear reflectors. The inclusion of reflectors provides more warning and better perception for following riders. This feature is a simple solution to increasing trail safety.

As a higher-end helmet, the Delta V comes standard with a premium 509 deluxe helmet bag.

Cons: What We Don't Like:

First things first, the sizing and fit of the Delta V is absolutely horrendous. The sizes are at least a size smaller than what's labeled (maybe even a size and a half smaller). We 100% recommend trying this helmet on before you commit to a purchase.

The Delta V visor takes substantial force to open when completely latched close–especially the first time. Be mindful that you will need good leverage; opening the visor while worn could prove highly uncomfortable. Luckily, with time and practice, it gets easier.

Unfortunately, the Delta Ignite system still requires a wired connection to your sled. 509 has promised a better solution involving a stowable power pack, but it has yet to come to fruition.

Conclusion:

Overall the Delta V is a great carbon fiber full-face snowmobile helmet for fast-paced trail riders. However, the required Ignite sled connection makes it a lousy choice for aggressive mountain riders and those wanting less restriction. Our biggest issue is the inaccurate sizing. We can't stress it enough, try this helmet on before purchasing. We highly discourage online purchases without having first tried for an accurate fit.
