Get Ride Ready – Preseason Gear Check

The first ride of the season is almost here, and I can't wait! Before the snow blankets everything, let's take a moment to check our gear and ensure we're all set for another thrilling winter of unforgettable days and backcountry adventures. Whether you're chasing fresh tracks or leading your friends, a preseason gear check is key to avoiding hiccups and making the most of our time on the slopes. Let's get excited!

General Guidelines /

Cold temps are tough on electronics, and even tougher on batteries. Before the season begins, take time to inspect every device you rely on—whether it's a beacon, radio, heated goggle, or avalanche airbag.

  • Check for Corrosion: Remove battery covers and inspect contacts for any white or green residue. Clean lightly with a dry cloth (don't use water).
  • Recharge or Replace: Some gear uses integrated rechargeable batteries, while others rely on replaceable AA or AAA cells. Fully charge or replace them now, and always keep spares in your pack. Use fresh alkalines and avoid rechargeable batteries.
  • Test Functionality: Power on each device to verify that lights, sounds, and controls respond correctly. Follow manufacturer recommendations for testing gear.
  • Store Smart: Keep devices and spare batteries at room temperature until ride day. Seek to maintain a charge level of 80%. Cold storage can drain charge and damage cells over time.

A little preseason care ensures your electronics work reliably when temperatures drop and communication counts.

Avalanche Safety Gear /

Beacons //

Pop the battery cover and look for any signs of corrosion or rust. Replace batteries with a fresh set (avoid rechargeables), and confirm that your beacon powers on, transmits, and searches properly. Run a quick test with a partner and note your search range—it's worth doing a thorough beacon check before each season. (Browse Beacons)

Airbag Systems //

Canister Models: Verify that your canister is fully pressurized (trigger is loaded), properly threaded, and free of leaks. If possible, also practice a deployment, then swap your used canister with a full can. Carry a backup for accidents. (Shop Refills)

Electric Models: Check for corrosion around battery terminals and connectors. Recharge fully, update firmware (if applicable), and perform a deployment test. Confirm that the trigger and inflation systems operate smoothly. (Shop Electric Airbags)

Probes //

Extend your probe and make sure the locking mechanism snaps securely into place. Check for bent sections, frayed cables, or sticky joints, then clean dry before repacking. (Browse Probes)

Shovels //

Inspect the handle, blade, and rivets for cracks or sharp burrs. If your shovel wobbles or feels loose, it's time for a replacement. A sturdy shovel isn't just for digging—it's your lifeline during an emergency. (Browse Shovels)

Electronics & Communication /

Radios //

Charge batteries, verify your channels and privacy codes (if applicable), update firmware, and perform a quick voice check with your group. Keep spare batteries for a backup power bank on hand for long days or cold snaps that sap battery life faster than expected. (Shop Radios)

Heated Gear //

Heated goggles, gloves, and layers make all-day riding more comfortable—but only if they're charged. Test each power bank or battery pack for full output, and make sure cables and connectors are secure. For older batteries, consider replacing them before the firt big ride.

Apparel & Gear Maintenance /

Pull your outwear, helmet, gloves, and boots from storage for a complete check.

  • Helmet: Look for cracks, dents, or foam compression—replace any helmet that's taken a hit.
  • Goggles: Clean lenses, inspect foam for separation, and check your heated lens connections if applicable.
  • Outerwear: Wash wtih a DWR-safe detergent and tumble-dry on low to reactivate waterproofing.
  • Boots: Inspect for any cracks, the condition of soles, BOA systems and laces, and ensure liners are dry and free of damage. Replace worn out liners if necessary.
  • Pack: Repack your avalanche tools in the proper order—shovel and probe accessible first, beacon stored on your body, not in your bag.

Stay Warm. Stay Connected. Stay Safe /

Preparation builds confidence—and confidence keeps you calm when it counts. From airbag refills and beacon batteries to heated goggles and gloves, take time to refill, recharge, and replace what's needed.

When the snow finally drops, you'll be ready to pull the cord, hit the throttle, and make the most of every ride.
