Klim Atlas Airbags Review (2023)

Klim has recently launched their highly anticipated 2023 avalanche airbag packs, which includes their much-awaited avalanche airbag vest. Adhering to a philosophy of simplicity and innovation, this year's models have undergone a complete redesign, featuring a lighter, more streamlined appearance and modular design. In this article, we will delve deeper into the upgrades in the redesigned Atlas Series, as well as its potential shortcomings, providing riders with an insider's perspective on the benefits of these packs.

New Models

Atlas 24 Avalanche Backpack:

The Atlas 24 Backpack is designed to meet the needs of the most extreme mountain riders who require maximum storage space. It replaces the Atlas 26 as Klim's largest avalanche airbag and is nearly a half pound lighter. The pack features a full clamshell-style opening and increased storage capacity in the hip belt. The probe carry is no longer included but can be purchased as an additional attachment, as is the case with the new Klim Attack Chest Harness.

Atlas 14 Avalanche Backpack:

The Atlas 14 Backpack is Klim's lightest and most minimal avalanche backpack to date, weighing 10% less than the Aspect 16. All gear storage has been consolidated into a single main clamshell compartment. The backpack's simple design makes it perfect for active riders who are conscious about weight. The Atlas 14 can be modified with the Rapid Probe Deployment attachment and/or the Klim Attack Harness.

Atlas 14 Avalanche Vest:

Klim has finally released an airbag vest. The Atlas 14 Vest is one of Klim's lightest airbags available and comfortably distributes weight through its vest design. It features complete chest protection similar to the Klim Tek Vest (but less restrictive), making it the most protective Klim airbag pack. The Atlas Vest comes in two sizes: XS-MD and LG-3X.

Redesign & Simplification

Sleek and Minimal Design: The 2023 Klim Atlas Airbags boast a complete redesign, emphasizing a sleek and minimal aesthetic. The new packs are notably lighter, less bulky, and exude a more refined appearance compared to the aggressive look of their predecessors.

Clamshell-Style Opening: One of the standout improvements is the introduction of a true clamshell-style opening. Unlike the previous generation pack, the adjustment straps have been relocated and are no longer attached to the compartment flap or crossing the zipper paths. The zippers have also been extended further down. These changes allow riders to fully open the main compartment, similar to a suitcase, simplifying the packing process and enhancing accessibility.

Dedicated External Radio Pouch: Gone are the days of digging through your pack to adjust the channel and settings on your radio. All of the redesigned packs feature an external radio pocket near the top above the back panel. This change provides more room in the main compartments, requires less hassle with mic routing (and less cable length), and provides easier access to the radio for adjustments—though you will still likely need to remove your pack or have a buddy access the pocket for you.

Modularity: Klim's new airbag design features improvements in modularity and customization by offering more attachment options. It's great to see this change, as previously, many Atlas 26 customers would opt to remove the Rapid Probe Deployment Holster while others preferred the chest harness of the Aspect. Now, riders have the freedom to purchase and add any attachments they need or keep using their packs without them. This year, Klim introduced the option to add the Rapid Probe Deployment (RPD) System and Attack Chest Harness to your pack. Additionally, Klim has launched an innovative new beacon holster, the Quick Draw Beacon Holster.

Missed Opportunities

Klim has made significant improvements in certain aspects of their product line, such as reducing weight and bulk, enhancing radio storage, and introducing a vest. However, while making these improvements, some key quality-of-life features that made the previous generation packs so great have been removed, resulting in some noticeable drawbacks. Here's a detailed breakdown of our disappointments and areas where we would like to see improvement:

External Shovel Carry System (Or Attachment) — Despite the increased focus on accessibility, modularity, and safety, we were surprised to find that the new design lacks an external shovel storage option. It is disappointing to see this oversight, as external shovel solutions have become an industry standard and a rider expectation. External shovel access enables riders to access all their rescue gear without compromising their safety and provides increased convenience and storage space. We hope that Klim recognizes this need and considers adding an attachment option in the future.

Compromises To Storage — We understand that Klim needed to sacrifice storage features to create a lighter, more minimalist backpack. However, we were disappointed to see some unnecessary changes. For instance, the detachable tool bag on the Aspect was an excellent modular storage solution that also served as external shovel blade storage. If riders wanted less bulk, they could simply detach the tool bag. We hoped to see a similar feature/attachment with the new packs. Additionally, we were disappointed to find that the front pocket is significantly tighter and no longer features internal pockets. The goggle pocket also lacks the lens pouch and straps found in the previous generation. We hope that future iterations of these packs will feature the return of these designs.

Final Thoughts

Klim's new Avalanche Airbag Packs mark a significant leap forward in backcountry safety, combining sleek design with innovative features. The redesign, with its emphasis on simplicity and modularity, showcases the brand's commitment to meeting diverse rider needs.

The Atlas Series brings forth a lighter and more refined aesthetic. Its clamshell-style opening streamlines the packing process, and the dedicated external radio pocket eliminates the need for rummaging through the main compartments. Increased modularity is a welcome move, allowing riders to customize their packs with various attachments.

While there are some missed opportunities and compromises, such as the absence of external shovel storage and changes in compartment features, it's essential to recognize the overall positive trajectory. Despite the disappointments, the Atlas Series stands out with its improvements in size, weight, and simplicity. The long-awaited airbag vest and the enhanced modular design, featuring various accessories and attachments, cater to a broad spectrum of rider preferences.

Klim's 2023 Avalanche Airbag Packs may not be flawless, but they represent a step forward in the pursuit of safety and convenience for backcountry enthusiasts. As riders embrace these advancements, Klim's commitment to refining their products ensures a promising future for those who venture into the untamed expanses of the mountains.
